This Week's Wisdom:
"If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." - African Proverb
About the Wisdom
This proverb, steeped in the traditions of various African cultures, underscores the value of community and collaboration over individual pursuits.
It serves as a reminder that while individual efforts can achieve quick results, lasting and meaningful achievements are often the fruit of collective endeavor. Joint endeavors can also be a lot more enjoyable and rewarding.
Personal Reflection
In my earlier career, I often prided myself on being a self-starter and individual achiever. However, as my responsibilities grew and the projects I undertook became more complex, the limits of going it alone became apparent. Embracing this proverb’s wisdom, I shifted towards a more collaborative approach, relying more on others, asking for help, and searching for collaborators who could complement my skillset. I also began allocating more time to connecting with others and joining groups of like-minded colleagues interested in talent development, coaching, and other passions. The transition from an individualistic mindset to valuing the power of community has not only enhanced the quality and scale of my projects but has also brought a richer, more fulfilling dimension to my work and personal life. Work became less lonely and a lot more fun!
